# OpenPhotoId > OpenPhotoId is a free, open-source (MIT or Apache-2.0) passport photo maker for passport, visa and ID photos, in the browser at https://openphotoid.com/. It works offline after the first visit. Pick the document, choose a photo or take one, and download a file checked against the official rules; or run a batch of any size and get a CSV report of which checks each photo passed. No sign-up, no watermark, and nothing is uploaded. Source code: https://gitlab.com/open-photoid/openphotoid ## What it does - **Finds the face.** Five landmarks locate the head, measure its tilt, and anchor every rule that follows. - **Separates you from the background.** A matting model produces a soft edge, and a second pass resolves hair at full resolution. - **Paints the required background, or keeps yours.** The exact colour each document names, such as white for a Japanese passport or light grey for an Australian one. The US, UK, Canadian, South Korean, Singapore and Chinese passports, India's Passport Seva photo and the DV Lottery refuse a photo changed with software, so for those the background is left as it is ("Leave as it is"): the app crops and scales the photo, checks its own background, and changes nothing else. - **Crops to the rules.** Head height, eye line and centring each have an allowed band; three sliders let you move within them. - **Checks the result.** Twelve checks run on the finished file, each reporting its measured value and the band it was judged against. - **Exports for the portal or the print shop.** A JPEG inside the portal's size window, a lossless PNG with the right DPI, or (in the web app and the Android app) a 4x6, 5x7, A4 or Letter sheet tiled with cutting guides. Photos sit edge to edge: a 4x6 in sheet holds six 2 x 2 in photos or eight 35 x 45 mm ones. The sheet is a 300 dpi JPEG the exact size of the paper, so print it at actual size (100%), not fit to page. ## Documents covered 25 documents from 16 countries and the EU. 22 link the official page their rules come from; 3 — ID card 1-inch (China), ID card 2-inch (China) and PAN card (India) — have no single official page and follow common practice. - Australia, Passport: 413 x 531 px (300 dpi), 35 x 45 mm, light grey background. Every entry, with its head-height band and notes: https://openphotoid.com/documents.html ## Facts - **Free.** Every feature, every photo. There is no paid tier. - **Nothing is uploaded.** The core is written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, and has no HTTP client compiled into it. The face detector and the matting model run on your own device. - **No account needed.** Nothing on the site is behind a sign-in. - **Works offline** after the first visit. - **Open source** under MIT or Apache-2.0. - The app speaks English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Spanish and Portuguese. ## Limits worth knowing - A portal can still reject a photo for reasons no software can measure, such as an expression or a reflection on glasses. - If the document you need is not in the list, it is not supported. - It runs in any modern browser, on desktop or phone. There are also apps for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel, https://openphotoid.com/download/mac), Windows (https://openphotoid.com/download/windows) and Android (https://openphotoid.com/download/android); the iPhone/iPad download is coming back soon. - Tested on iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 and on Android with Chrome. iOS 17 cannot start the models. ## Links - [OpenPhotoId](https://openphotoid.com/): the app and what it does - [Privacy policy](https://openphotoid.com/privacy.html) - [Supported documents](https://openphotoid.com/documents.html): every document with its size, background, file limits and official source - [US passport photo](https://openphotoid.com/us-passport-photo.html): the 2 x 2 inch US passport photo, its rules and a check example - [Passport photo size](https://openphotoid.com/passport-photo-size.html): the 25 documents grouped by print size and file size, how many photos fit on each print sheet, and how to print it at actual size - [Take a passport photo at home](https://openphotoid.com/take-passport-photo-at-home.html): taking the photo with a phone camera, what the checks catch, and when a studio photo is required - [Indian passport photo](https://openphotoid.com/indian-passport-photo.html): the 630 x 810 px online upload (up to 250 KB, own background kept) and the 2 x 2 inch print, with the OCI and PAN card photos - [Chinese passport photo](https://openphotoid.com/chinese-passport-photo.html): the 33 x 48 mm Chinese passport photo and the China online visa photo (354-420 x 472-560 px), from the Chinese embassies' pages - [Singapore passport photo](https://openphotoid.com/singapore-passport-photo.html): the 400 x 514 px file for ICA e-Services and the 35 x 45 mm print, and how to keep your own white background - [DV Lottery photo](https://openphotoid.com/dv-lottery-photo.html): the 600 x 600 px JPEG of 240 KB or less, head 50-69% of the image, own background kept - [UK passport photo](https://openphotoid.com/uk-passport-photo.html): GOV.UK's digital (at least 600 x 750 px, 50 KB to 10 MB) and printed (45 x 35 mm) rules, the "unaltered by computer software" rule and the own background kept, and what a photo code is: a link from a photo booth or shop; OpenPhotoId does not provide one, and online applicants can upload their own photo instead - [Bulk passport photos](https://openphotoid.com/bulk-passport-photos.html): one document for any number of photos, twelve checks on each, a ZIP of the files and a CSV report of which checks each photo passed, all on your own computer; for HR teams, schools and organisations, with the limits of the batch - [Passport photo white background](https://openphotoid.com/passport-photo-white-background.html): which documents ask for white, which refuse a replaced background (US passport and DV Lottery, India Passport Seva, South Korea, Canada), and which use another colour - [Passport Photo Online alternative](https://openphotoid.com/passport-photo-online-alternative.html): how OpenPhotoId compares with Passport Photo Online and PhotoAiD (price, upload, expert review, guarantee, documents), checked against their sites on 21 October 2026, and when theirs is the better choice - [Blog](https://openphotoid.com/blog/) - [Passport photo rejected?
