Supported documents
25 passport, visa and ID photo documents.
Every document OpenPhotoId can make a photo for, from 16 countries and the EU, with the numbers the app checks each photo against. 22 of the 25 link the official page their rules come from — the issuing authority, or one of its embassies or consulates. ID card 1-inch (China), ID card 2-inch (China) and PAN card (India) have no single official page; their values follow common practice, and their notes say so. If the one you need is not here, the app does not support it.
A portal or an officer can still reject a photo for reasons no software can measure, and rules change: check the official page before you submit.
Before you submit — Australia, Passport: The Australian Passport Office advises against online passport photo services and apps, citing the risk of identity fraud. OpenPhotoId uploads nothing, but the Office recommends a professional photo provider.
Before you submit — Canada, Passport: Canada requires a passport photo taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio, not edited in any way (including filters and AI tools). Use this crop to check the framing; submit the photographer's print.
Before you submit — China, Passport: The Chinese embassy says the photo must not be modified and composite photos are not accepted. Take it against a plain white wall and keep its own background; OpenPhotoId only crops and scales it.
Before you submit — Singapore, Passport: Singapore's ICA says the photo “must not be altered or enhanced in any way”, including with photo editing software; resizing is allowed. Take it against a plain white wall and keep its own background.
Before you submit — South Korea, Passport: South Korea does not accept passport photos whose background was removed or replaced with editing software. Take the photo against a plain white background; a replaced background can be rejected.
Before you submit — Türkiye, Passport: Türkiye's NVI does not accept photocopies or photos reproduced on a computer. Use this file to check the framing, and hand in a print on photo paper, such as one from a photo shop, not a sheet from a home printer.
Before you submit — United Kingdom, Passport: GOV.UK says the photo must be “unaltered by computer software”. Take it against a plain cream or light grey wall and keep its own background; OpenPhotoId only crops and scales it.
Before you submit — United States, Passport: The US State Department says: “Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters.” For online renewal: “Do not use any kind of filter or retouching tools to change your appearance.” Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall and keep its own background; repositioning or cropping it is allowed.

Face height 31-36mm of 70mm total height (larger frame than most countries — more headroom/shoulder visible). Chinese Embassy in the US (2019): 33 x 48 mm, head width 15-22 mm, head height 28-33 mm, crown 3-5 mm from the top edge, chin at least 7 mm from the bottom edge, white background; photos must not be modified and composite photos are not accepted, so the photo keeps its own background and is only cropped and scaled. Glasses may be worn if the lenses are not tinted and the frames and glare do not obscure the eyes. Head width is not modelled; the eye-line band is an engineering estimate from the margins.

The Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, Article 13) sets the photo's technical requirements by ICAO Doc 9303 and leaves the details to each state's missions. German missions' visa FAQ: recent (no older than three months), 35 x 45 mm on photo-quality paper, face 70-80% of the photo (32-36 mm), white or off-white background, glasses allowed if the frames do not cover any part of the eyes. Other Schengen states' missions publish their own pages; check the one you apply to. Eye-line band is an ICAO generic estimate.

Embassy of India, The Hague, photographs for Indian passport: colour, 2 inch x 2 inch (51 mm x 51 mm), full face and front view, eyes open, the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, the face 70 to 80% of the photo and centred, plain white or off-white background with no distracting shadows, prescription glasses only if clear and thin-framed with no flash reflection and not obscuring the eyes, ideally printed by a professional studio. 51 mm is 2 in rounded, so the photo is made at 2 in (50.8 mm, 600 x 600 px at 300 dpi), which is also what fits three rows of two on a 4 x 6 in print. The eye-line band is an ICAO generic estimate. For the online Passport Seva upload see india-seva-digital.

Nigeria Immigration Service e-passport portal, photo upload and photo guidelines: image resolution 600 x 800 px, white background, under 2 MB, JPG or PNG, hair not covering the face or ears, no headphones or masks; eyes 56-69% of the height from the bottom; eyeglasses no longer allowed. The portal gives the head two ways: its guidelines say 50-69% of the image height (top of hair to bottom of chin), and the diagram on the upload page draws a 35 x 45 mm photo with the head at least 29 mm and no more than 34 mm (64-76%). The head band is where both hold, 64.4-69%. The guidelines also carry a tip copied from another country's page (2 x 2 in print, at least 600 x 600 px), which contradicts the portal's own 600 x 800 upload; the upload size is used. The paper form asks for passport-sized photographs without a size.

An online passport application (for a child under 12) takes an electronic photo of at least 768 x 1004 px, up to 2.5 MB, in 35 x 45 proportions; the output is made at 781 x 1004 px, which meets that floor and prints at 35 x 45 mm. Population and Citizenship Affairs (NVI) passport FAQ: taken in the last six months to the ICAO MRTD standards, face fully visible, frontal, 50 x 60 mm, no tinted lenses or sunglasses; photocopies, photos reproduced on a computer and non-biometric photos are not accepted. The Consulate General in New York's sheet (with the Second Generation Passport Instruction): plain white background, high-quality camera, printed on good paper; prescription glasses only if the eyes are clear and the lenses do not reflect. The instruction gives the face as 32-36 mm and also as 70-80% of the photo; on a 60 mm photo those disagree (32-36 mm is 53-60%), so the head band follows the millimetres. It prefers mid-grey over white for light hair; the app paints white. Eye-line band is an ICAO generic estimate.

DV-2026 instructions: JPEG, 600 x 600 px square, 240 KB or less; head 50-69% of the image height; plain white or off-white background; no eyeglasses. "You may be ineligible for a DV if the entry photographs ... have been manipulated in any way", and "a photograph that has been manipulated ... may make you ineligible". The State Department's visa photo page: "Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance in any way." So the photo keeps its own background and gets no retouching: it is cropped and scaled to the required 600 x 600 px and nothing else is changed.
