Indian passport photo, made and checked in your browser
An Indian passport photo comes in two forms: a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) print on a white background, and a 630 × 810 pixel file of up to 250 KB for uploading. OpenPhotoId is a free passport photo maker that makes either one on your own device, crops it to the rules Indian missions publish and checks the result before you download it. No sign-up, no watermark, and nothing is uploaded.

Indian passport photo size and rules
These are the numbers the app uses. They come from the photo pages of Indian embassies and consulates: the ICAO photo guidelines for passport applications (630 × 810 px, up to 250 KB) and the 2 × 2 inch specification for a printed photo.
| Rule | Online upload (Passport Seva) | Printed photo |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 630 × 810 px · digital only | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) · made at 50.8 mm, 600 × 600 px at 300 dpi |
| File | JPEG · up to 250 KB | for printing |
| Background | white, in the photo itself | white |
| Face | 80–85% of the photo | 70–80% of the photo |
| Glasses | take them off | clear, thin-framed prescription glasses only |
| Editing | “Photos should be unaltered by computer software” | the app sets the white background |
The printed rules follow the Embassy of India in the Netherlands, which asks for the face to fill 70–80% of a 2 × 2 inch photo and accepts clear, thin-framed prescription glasses. Indian missions do not all word them the same way, so if you apply through one, check its own photo page. Every entry, with its official page, is on the supported documents list.
The online Indian passport photo keeps its own background
Because the guidelines say “Photos should be unaltered by computer software”, the app does not replace the background of an online Indian passport photo. It crops and scales your photo to 630 × 810 px, keeps the wall that is already behind you and measures how flat and how white it is. If that check does not pass, take the photo again in front of a plain white wall rather than editing it. The file size is found by search, not guessed: the app looks for a JPEG quality that stays under 250 KB.
How the photo is made
- Pick the Indian passport, online or printed, then choose a photo; on a phone, the photo picker also lets you take one.
- The app finds your face from five landmarks and measures its tilt.
- For the online file your own background is kept and checked; for the print it is set to white.
- The crop lands in the middle of the head-height, eye-line and centring bands at once. Three sliders let you move within them.
- Twelve checks run on the finished file, and the face is detected again on the output.
What each check measures is explained in what a passport photo check can measure.
Printing a 2 × 2 inch Indian passport photo
In India this is often called a passport size photo. For paper, the web app and the Android app tile the printed Indian passport photo on a 4×6, 5×7, A4 or Letter sheet with cutting guides: a 4×6 in sheet holds six, A4 and Letter hold 20 each. Print it at actual size, not “Fit to page”, and measure one photo before you cut: it should be 2 inches across. More on printing the sheet at actual size. The online file is digital only, so there is no sheet for it.
OCI card and PAN card photos
- OCI card. The OCI services FAQ asks for a square photo of 200 × 200 to 900 × 900 px, a JPEG of up to 200 KB, on a plain light background that is not white, with the face covering 80% of the photo. The app makes 900 × 900 px on light grey. OCI entry.
- PAN card. No official page could be found for the PAN card photo, so the app follows common practice: 25 × 35 mm, a JPEG of 20 to 50 KB, white background. Check the application page before you submit. PAN entry.
Before you submit an Indian passport photo
- Take your glasses off, face the camera straight on with your eyes open, in even light. A window works, direct sun does not.
- Stand in front of a plain white wall, a little away from it, so no shadow falls behind your head.
- Keep your head and shoulders in frame, with a little room above your hair.
- A portal or an officer can still reject a photo for reasons no software can measure. Read the checklist rather than assuming a pass.

Free, private, and on every device
Every feature is free, with no account and no watermark. The face detector and the matting model run on your device, so the photo never leaves it, and after the first visit the app works offline. It runs in any modern browser, on desktop or phone, and there are apps for macOS, Windows and Android; the iPhone and iPad download is coming back soon.
