Passport photo size, document by document
There is no single passport photo size. Most countries ask for 35 × 45 mm, the United States asks for 2 × 2 inches, and a few portals want only a file of a set number of pixels. This page groups the 25 documents OpenPhotoId covers by size. OpenPhotoId is a free passport photo maker that crops your photo to the passport photo size you pick, in your browser, without uploading it.
Every passport photo size at a glance
Pixel sizes are at 300 dpi, the resolution the app prints at. Where a portal names its own pixel size, that is the passport photo size the app exports.

35 × 45 mm, the most common passport photo size
Nine of the 25 documents use this passport photo size. What changes between them is the head height and the background:
- Australia, Japan, South Korea: head 32–36 mm, about 71–80% of the photo. Australia asks for light grey; Japan and South Korea for white.
- Schengen visa, Poland and Russia: face 70–80% of the photo, white background. Poland’s online application takes a file of at least 768 × 1004 px and up to 2.5 MB; the app exports 781 × 1004 px, which meets that and still prints at this passport photo size.
- United Kingdom: crown to chin 29–34 mm, light grey. This is the printed size. GOV.UK asks for at least 600 × 750 px for a digital photo; the app exports 600 × 771 px, which meets that and still prints at 35 × 45 mm.
- Singapore: face 25–35 mm on paper; the online upload is a 400 × 514 px file of up to 8 MB. More on the Singapore passport photo page.
- UAE ID card: face 70–80% of the photo, white background.
South Korea's online upload is 413 × 531 px and up to 500 KB, and South Korea does not accept a photo whose background was replaced with editing software. Take it against a plain white background. The US State Department says not to change a passport photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, and not to use any filter or retouching tool to change your appearance. The Australian Passport Office advises against online passport photo services and apps, and recommends a professional photo provider.
2 × 2 inches: the US passport photo size
The US passport is a square: 2 × 2 inches on white or off-white, saved as 600 × 600 px at 300 dpi; online renewal takes a file of 54 KB to 10 MB. The head is 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm), 50–68.8% of the photo, and glasses are not allowed. The DV Lottery asks for a 600 × 600 px JPEG of 240 KB or less; see the DV Lottery photo page. More on this passport photo size on the US passport photo page.
The other passport photo sizes
- India, 2 × 2 in: India’s rules say 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm); 51 mm is 2 in rounded, so the app makes it at 2 in (50.8 mm). Face 70–80% of the photo, white or off-white background, clear thin-framed prescription glasses only. The India online visa takes a 600 × 600 px JPEG of 10–300 KB, white, no glasses. More on the Indian passport photo page.
- Canada, 50 × 70 mm: face 31–36 mm. Canada requires a photo taken in person by a commercial photographer, not edited in any way, so use this crop only to check the framing.
- Brazil, 50 × 70 mm: only applicants under 5 bring a photo; everyone else is photographed at the appointment. The head band is ICAO guidance scaled to the frame, not a published figure.
- China, 33 × 48 mm: head 28–33 mm, white background. The China visa photo is a file, below. More on the Chinese passport photo page.
- China ID card, 1-inch and 2-inch, and India's PAN card: no single official page. These sizes follow common practice, so check the form you are filling in.
- Türkiye, 50 × 60 mm: the only document here with this passport photo size. Face 32–36 mm, white background. Türkiye’s population office says photos reproduced on a computer are not accepted, so check with the office before you print one yourself.
When the passport photo size is a file, not a print
Five documents are uploaded and never printed, so the passport photo size is a pixel size and a file size window. These have no print size, so there is no print sheet:
- China online visa: 390 × 520 px, 40–120 KB.
- India Passport Seva: 630 × 810 px, up to 250 KB, face 80–85% of the photo.
- India OCI card: 900 × 900 px, up to 200 KB, a light background that is not white.
- Nigeria passport: 600 × 800 px, up to 2 MB, JPEG or PNG, white background, no glasses.
- Saudi Arabia online visa: 200 × 200 px, 5–100 KB.
The app saves a JPEG inside the portal's window. The file size is found by search, not guessed.
How many passport photos fit on one sheet
For paper, the web app and the Android app tile your photo on a 4×6 in, 5×7 in, A4 or Letter sheet; the Mac and Windows apps do not make print sheets yet. These are the counts they give, and they show the number before you save. Photos sit edge to edge, with a thin grey cutting line along every edge, so six 2 × 2 in photos fill a 4×6 in print with nothing left over. On A4 and Letter they keep 3 mm clear at every edge for a home printer; 4×6 and 5×7 sheets have no margin and are meant to be printed borderless, at a photo shop, a kiosk or on a photo printer.
| Print size | Photos per sheet | Documents |
|---|---|---|
| 35 × 45 mm | 4×6 in: 8 · 5×7 in: 10 A4: 32 · Letter: 30 | Passports of Australia, Japan, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea and the United Kingdom; the Schengen visa; the UAE ID card |
| 2 × 2 in · 50.8 mm | 4×6 in: 6 · 5×7 in: 6 A4: 20 · Letter: 20 | US passport; Indian passport |
| 50 × 70 mm | 4×6 in: 4 · 5×7 in: 4 A4: 16 · Letter: 12 | Brazilian passport; Canadian passport, but Canada needs a photographer’s print |
| 50 × 60 mm | 4×6 in: 4 · 5×7 in: 6 A4: 16 · Letter: 16 | Türkiye passport |
| 33 × 48 mm | 4×6 in: 9 · 5×7 in: 10 A4: 36 · Letter: 32 | Chinese passport |
| 25 × 35 mm | 4×6 in: 16 · 5×7 in: 25 A4: 64 · Letter: 56 | Chinese ID card, 1-inch; Indian PAN card |
| 35 × 53 mm | 4×6 in: 4 · 5×7 in: 10 A4: 25 · Letter: 25 | Chinese ID card, 2-inch |
The five file-only documents have no print size, so there is no sheet for them.
Print the sheet at actual size
The sheet is a 300 dpi JPEG that is exactly the size of the paper: a 4×6 in sheet is 1200 × 1800 px, an A4 sheet 2480 × 3508 px. The photos come out at the right size only if nothing scales it.
- At a photo shop or kiosk: order a print of the same size as the sheet, a 4×6 in sheet as a 4×6 in print, and turn off any crop or fit option.
- At home: set the paper size to match the sheet and print at “Actual size” or 100% scale, not “Fit to page”, “Scale to fit” or “Fill”.
- Before you cut: measure one photo with a ruler. A US photo is 2 inches (50.8 mm) across, a 35 × 45 mm photo 35 mm. Then cut along the grey lines.
Getting the passport photo size right
You pick the document; you never type a passport photo size. The crop lands in the middle of the head-height, eye-line and centring bands, and twelve checks on the finished file confirm the pixel size and file size. For paper, at any passport photo size, the web app and the Android app tile the photo on a 4×6, 5×7, A4 or Letter sheet with cutting guides.
Of the 25 documents, 22 link the official page their rules come from, with the date they were last checked. Every entry, with its source and notes, is on the supported documents list. If the document you need is not there, it is not supported. A portal can still reject a photo for reasons no software can measure, so check the official page before you submit.
